4. WHY THEN DID SAMOURE TOURE WHO HAD PERSISTENTLY RESISTED THE FRENCH WAS FINALLY DEFEATED BYTHE EUROPEAN IMPERIALISTS IN 1898.
Approach
• Then show why Samoure was finally defeated
I. After capturing Bisandugu in 1892 moved south wards, he left behind his gold fields which had been major source of income, he formed a .new capital at Dakabala which did not survive French infiltration
2. The scotched earth policy did not only work to the detriment of the French but to his force also, he derived himself food, shelter while the French were supplied by areas they controlled and from France, his people and soldiers.
died of starvation, thirst and lack of shelter.
3. The way he divided his army for example one force to attack the French another one to conquer other areas and the third group to remove the civilians. This was a poor military strategy because the French defeated one after another.
4. The French had superior weapons, well trained forces and used advanced technology unlike Samoure Toure who had poor and old arms like muskets.
5. The war prolonged and became tiresome, he spent seven years coupled with other wars of defense and expansion with neighbours like Sikaso under Tube, such wars exhausted his army that only offered a token of resistance and later succumbed to French forces
6. African collaborators and opportunists like Tube of Sikaso allied with French and signed a treaty in 1888; he tried to secure alliance with Tukolor king in a message sent to him
"Let us therefore unite, you will hit from the north and I will harass them from the south and we will certainly manage to get rid of hem’’
7. However the Tukolor preferred an alliance with the French other than fellow Africans. It was because of incorporation with Africans that costed him a lot.
8. The British helped the French, they turned down his request for protection they did not keep the 1890 treaty, broke his way to the coast where he used to get guns and sell his goods, ivory hence losing a grip to power.
9. The economic activities had been disrupted, trade was no longer poss. slaves that were exchanged with guns were no longer being sold, trade gold and ivory was impossible because of instability, even trade routes been cut off especially from south.
10. The French determination to defeat Samoure Toure, they used all means bring him down for instance used his neighbours against him.
11. The divide and rule policy, the French signed a treaty with Futajalon in 1881 and that of Tukolor in 1887 which left Samoure Toure without alliance.
12. The detection of his soldiers from him and joined French forces to get food for their survival. This was because of the outbreak of famine in Mar society.
