Why was the. Buganda agreement signed in 1900?











It was the agreement signed between the British special commissioner,sir Harry H Johnston and the three legends of kabaka  Saudi Chwa all,Apollo kaggwa,stanslas mugwanya and zakaria kizito kisingiri
Negotiations went on for two and half months until the agreement was signed on 10 march 1900 at mengo with the CMS missionaries as the advisers
The agreement was intended to define the position of Buganda within a wider Uganda the baganda wanted to be recognized for their role in extending the British rule
It was to confirm that Buganda had submitted to British rule this followed the verbal declaration of a protectorate over Uganda in 1894.
The agreement was part of the British colonial effort to strengthen administration in Uganda for effective occupation
It was signed to regulate and define the relationship between Buganda and the British colonial government
It was to make Buganda safe for the missionary activities. Missionaries had sought protection from their home governments because the situation had become so hostile for them
The agreement was also an answer to Bishop tuckers cries to formalize the privileges of the Protestants over the catholics and Muslims
It was intended to further British exploitation policies ie prepare the ground for effective and fuller exploitation of Ugandan resources
It was also aimed at ending the existing political problems and conflicts between Buganda and Uganda
It was signed to introduce the rule of law in a country that had gone through a lot of political turmoil like the religious wars in Buganda
It was also signed to end the threats of the Sudanese mutineers in the north these had become riotous demanding a lot of money from the British who had hired them
It was signed to check on the activities of kabaka mwanga who was destabilizing the protectorate from the northern Uganda
It was also intended to find an acceptable way to both the Buganda and the British on how to assist the three year old king Daudi Chwa ll
It was signed to lay a platform for Buganda's political, economical and social development. Buganda seemed to offer an ideal atmosphere for development
It was also aimed at making Buganda self reliant through introducing economic reforms like growing of cash crops, payment of taxes and use of money
The British colonial government was anxious to reduce the administrative costs in Uganda hence the agreement
It was also signed to regulate and define the relationship between Buganda and the British colonial government
It waa intended to reward Buganda for their support and cooperation with the British colonial government in the extension of colonial rule that's why buyaga and bugangaizi was given to Buganda.
The agreement was also signed to end kabalega s rebellion that had destabilized the whole protectorate
It was also to serve as a legal document that would protect and safe guard the British imperialist interests in Uganda
It was aimed at making Buganda the spring board from where the rest of the Uganda would be colonized from
It was also signed to introduce political reforms for efficient administration of the protectorate. Hence defined the position of the kabaka and the lukiko
It was signed to solve the boundary problems between Buganda and her neighbors especially bunyoro.
