7.what were the effects of scramble and partition of east Africa?

The partition of east Africa completely eroded the independence of east African societies. Societies which were previously self governed were forced to acknowledge the authorities of the foreigners

African traditional leader lost their power and authority to those created by the colonialists

It resulted in the separation and dividing of people who previously belonged to same ethic grouping since the colonialists ignored ethic boundaries

The partition also accerelated the spread of European culture that had been started by missionaries.Africans were to worship a foreign God,dress eat bury and marry like the whites

It also marked the beginning of the economic exploitation of African resources, minerals and forests were all to be exploited to the benefit of the whites

Hut and gun tax were for the first time introduced and imposed to the Africa this was completely anew phenomenon that Africans had no experience with it

Africans that previously grew crop for their own consumption were now forced to grow crops that's they could not eat such as sisal cotton coffee and tea

It ended the long distance trade in east Africa and crumbled the trading empires of mirambo tippu tip and nyugu ya made

Increased missionary activities divided the Africans along religious lines creating enemity between followers of different religions

After the partition the colonialists began a crush programmer of developing their colonies by putting up infrastructure like roads railways to help in the exploitation of the African resources

Africans lost a lot of their land to the colonialists forexample the Kenyan highland were taken over by the white settlers and half of Buganda's land was taken over as crown lands

It accelerated missionary activities in east Africa the lack of security excuse was now solved more and more africans were therefore converted and more schools and hospitals built.

It led to an influx of a new group of people into east africa particularly in Kenya these were the white settlers this ended in the displacement of many Africans like Masai and Kikuyu

It sped up the development of legitimate trade in east Africa since slave trade had been abolished Africans were therefore to grow crops to feed the European industries
