The
construction of the line brought far reaching political economic and social
effects on the people of east Africa and the were
Transport
and communication from the interior to the coast was eased Uganda was therefore
opened up for exploitation of natural resources. The journey that used to take
months now was covered in weeks
The line
stimulated economic growth and promoted international and local
trade.agricultural produce could now be exported using the railway.after the
line had reached Kampala it was extended to areas of agricultural potential
like soroti and pakwach.copper in kasese was also exploited
The
construction of the line stimulated the growing of cash crop.Kenneth borup
introduced cotton in Uganda.in Kenya Charles Eliot also encouraged the growing
of cash crops.
Towns
developed especially along the railway routes such towns included kisumu Nakuru
and eldoret tororo jinja
There was
loss of lives those who proved stubborn refusing the line to pass through their
lands were killed
The Mandi
leader kiotale and many of the Mandi were killed to allow construction work go
on
The
construction of the line brought the Indians into the interior of east Africa.some
of the coolie remained back and started business
It caused an
influx of Europeans. Into east Africa and the came to trade and do agriculture
for example the white settlers took over the highlands of Kenya which later led
to racism.
The influx
of the whites led to political conflicts between the Asians and the whites
The
construction of the line led to the creation of employment opportunities for
many people some were employed as locomotive drivers traffic officers and
station managers which improved the lives of people in east Africa.
The line
save the lives of kamba who had famine from locusts drought and rinderpest
since food like rice could be ferried in time
The British
administration of Uganda was made easy since transportation of administrators
and troops was made simple
This made
east Africans lose their independence since it gave the British firm support to
effect their policies
The
construction of the line brought slave trade and human porterage to an end since
it made slaves useless
The British
introduced the hut tax in 1902 since they had spent a lot of money on the construction
of the Uganda railway hence had to recover back what was spent
Transportation
Costa were greatly reduced and economic exploitation eased since it was easy to
transport goods
A new
monetary system was introduced,the Indian traders introduced the Indian rupee
which was later followed by coins and paper money.
The line led
to development of feeder roads which were constructed to connect to places were
good were located
Western
civilization and evangelism was eased because the movement of missionaries was
made easy.
This led to
spread of Christianity, construction of schools and hospitals in east Africa
Africans
like the Mandi lost their land were the line past and some was taken over by
the white settlers
There was a
boost of industrial development due to the presence of the raw !materials.
