6 what were the reason for the scramble and partition of east Africa by the Europeans?

There were needs for raw materials to feed the industries in Europe since most European countries had started industrialization

The was need to secure profitable markets overseas for their finished goods since European markets had been overflowed with goods

They wanted to make east Africa a dumping place for the goods which had not competed well in European markets

There was a need to secure places where surplus capital could be invested.they also wanted to start plantation farms and exploit the African minerals

The discovery of huge quantities of minerals like diamond and gold between 1870 and 1880 in south Africa made the Europeans to rush to east Africa

There was also need to take over from the chartered companies which were facing financial constraints in their administration since they had run bankrupt

There was need to promote legitimate trade after the successful abolition of slave trade Africans had to be encouraged to grow cash crops for this trade to flourish

From a humanitarian point of view the European powers had a desire of stamping out slave trade which they regarded as evil and crime against humanity

The European powers also wanted to spread Christianity and since east Africa was still a virgin place for spreading the gospel

There was a need to civilize the Africans who were backward and not educated hence a need for western education

There was also a need to stop useless wars that were being fought between the different African societies

The growth of nationalism in Europe created the need for international recognition and prestige since a country with more colonies was consider the super power

The power imbalance in Europe created by the Franco Prussian war of 1870_1871 also increased the quest for colonies.this war was fought by the Germany and France.

The activities of king Leopold II in Congo also alarmed other European powers,he was a very ambitious king who was after creating a big kingdom

The Berlin conference of 1884-1885 also accerated the quest for colonies by giving it a legal acceptance.it came up with the the doctrine of effective occupation. Hence European powers had to rush for colonies claiming prior occupation of lands

The strategic importance of the Nile also acceralated the need forbritain after obtaining Egypt wanted to control all countries through which the Nile passes

Kenya was colonized to provide an outlet to Uganda which was a landlocked country

East africa was colonies by the britian because she wanted to keep an eye on India and protect her interests there
