15 what
was the role of the lord delamere in the
economic development of Kenya?
Lord delamere first came to Kenya in 1897 on a hunting
expedition and during this visit he greatly admired Kenya
This motivated him to return in 1903 and he became one of
the successful setters in Kenya and soon he founded the planters and farmers
association that encouraged settler farming in Kenya
He ardently campaigned for the white settlers exclusive
right to stay in Kenyan highlands
He was also very aggressive hot tampered and uncompromising
in his campaign for white superiority. His passion was to turn Kenya into a
white mans country hence conflicting with the Africans and Asians.
He led the settlers group to a conference that had been
called by the duke of the Devonshire to settle the land and political conflicts
that rose between the races in Kenya.
He introduced wheat growing in Kenya and the crop did very
well in uasin plateau but also faced a problem of rust a wheat disease
He began experiments on breeding a rust resistant variety in
1909, he established a flour mill near Nairobi called UGA limited
On top of wheat lord delamere introduced and encouraged
coffee growing after world war, coffee became one of the leading crops grown in Kenya
He equally encouraged the growing of other crops like tea
and sisal by 1920 the two were doing well in Kenya tea was being grown in
limiru Jericho and Nakuru and sisal near thika
He also pioneered stock farmingin Kenya.he established
equator ranch at njoro mainly rearing cattle sheep and pigs. His animals were
imported from new Zealand and Britain
A bacon industry was established in 1905 in Nairobi as
people tried to follow his example of rearing pigs
He undertook research in cattle diseases cross bred exotic cattle
with local breeds and employed veterinary doctors
Around 1920 he abandoned stock farming for diary farming
this was because of problems like coastal fever and constant raids from the Nandi
He established diary factories for example he established a cooperative
creamery called the Kenya cooperative creamery.
Up to his death in 1931 he was still the leader of the white
settlers
