Sir. Benjamin D'urban 1834-1838

He aimed at organizing the Cape Frontier security through vigorous expansion.
He attempted to the Kaffir wars/Cape-Nguni wars up to1838.
He encouraged many missionaries in Nguni (Xhosa) areas to negotiate peace.
Tried to abolish slave trade and slavery in the Colony.
Freed slaves became ‘apprentices’
He tried to compensate the Boer settlers for the loss of their slaves.
In 1836, he had moved the Xhosa far beyond the Keiskamma River.
The Boers were again compensated with land between Keiskemma River and the Kei River.
D'urban reversed his decision when Dr. John Philip persuaded London to give kind back to the Africans.
The Cape Colonists appreciated his services in the war of the Xhosa against the Boers in 1834.
He gave land Concessions to the white settlers in the colony which boosted his prestige and popularity among them.
His administration saw a Constitutional governance of the Cape Colony.
Government expenditures of the Colony were reduced which served many revenues/ financial resources.
Under him Municipal Councils were introduced in 1836.
A Legislative Council was formed in 1834. This made the government more representative. The Legislative Council passed laws of the Colony under white settlers (Colonists).
His good work for British settlers in the Cape Colony and Natal region made, a missionary Allen Gardiner to name Port Natal, Durban.
