8.what were the problems faced by the Europeans in the scramble and partition of east Africa?

They faced frequent rebellions from the Africans like the Mandi, kanaka mwana and omukama kabalega who did not want to see any foreigner on their land.

The poor means of transport hindered their work, there were no developed roads railway lines or even motor vehicles therefore the movement of colonialists was difficult

Communication to their headquarters in Europe was difficult since there was no phone at the time making information flow was slow creating unnecessary delays

They also faced difficulties in drawing the boundaries of east Africa this was because at times boundaries led to the division of some tribes

The Arab slave trader especially at the coast made their work difficult .they were not happy with the missionary work of stopping slave trade.
Wild animals like lions and leopards ate some of the colonialist

They also lacked supplies as they did not always have enough funds for food clothes and accommodation and drugs

Tropical diseases like malaria also made their work difficult. These claimed some of their staff reducing the already small numbers

Rivalries between the Europeans themselves also hampered the colonization process forexample the British clashed with the Germans on many occasion

Geographical barriers like the thick forests lakes rivers and mountains also made their movements difficult

The influence of the Islam that was deeply rooted at the coast also proved a formidable challenges to the colonialist. They were mistaken for Christian missionaries and thus opposed.

Language barrier this was because each tribe in east Africa had its own language therefore passing on orders to Africans waa difficult since they did not know English and German

Lack of manpower there were very few people who were sent perhaps because of the high cost maintaining them in east Africa.

Many of the Africans who collaborated with them were opportunist for example kakungulu was after creating his own empire

They also lacked funds to carry out their duties effectively foerexample they didn't have enough money to meet the cost of administration

The influence of the sultans at the coast also made their work difficult, they wanted to maintain their area as sovereign of European influence

The religious wars in Buganda also consumed a lot of their time and money as they had to first quell them in order to protect the missionaries.
